7 Activities to do on St. Patrick’s Day with Your Family

While St. Patrick’s Day parades are on pause this year, you can still commemorate this joyful day of Irish heritage. Here are seven fun activities for your family to keep safe and have a whale of a time all the same.

1. Conduct a Leprechaun Art Challenge
   Each member of the family is challenged to create their very own leprechaun artwork. Create an action figure sculpture with clay. Draw a masterpiece or paint an impressionist portrait. The family member with the most interesting leprechaun is the winner. Share a photo of your family’s favorite piece on social media with the hashtag #askteamclean.
2. Enjoy Irish Music
   Fill the house with the sounds of Ireland. Check out bands such as The Dubliners, The Irish Rovers, The Pogues, The Saw Doctors, The Cranberries, The Waterboys and many more. Or let Spotify do all of the work for you with one of their existing St. Patrick’s Day playlists. If you’re lucky (...we couldn’t help ourselves!), maybe you’ll be able to snag some footage of a family member doing a jig or Irish step dance to the many uplifting songs.
3. Cook a Feast Together
   What is St. Patrick’s Day without some savory corned beef and cabbage? Get the whole family involved in the meal prep process and consider serving up Irish soda bread, potatoes and your favorite Irish dessert. If you’re older than 21, we might also recommend responsibly enjoying a pint of cold, frothy Guinness.
4. Send the Kids on a Quest for Gold
   Stock up on some chocolate gold coins and hide them throughout the house, or in the yard if the weather’s nice. Then send the kids off on an adventure to find the hidden treasure.
5. Watch an Irish Movie Together 
   There are many notable family movies set in Ireland and/or inspired by uniquely Irish stories. We suggest getting the family together for a St. Patrick’s Day movie night. If you have young children, we recommend two animated movies: The Secret of Kells or the new Wolfwalkers. If your kids are a little older, our recommendation is Sing Street, a music-themed coming-of-age story set in Dublin.
6. Get the Whole Neighborhood Involved with a Socially Distanced Shamrock Scavenger Hunt
   Are you in a neighborhood with other families that celebrate St. Patrick’s Day? It’s time to bring these lads and lasses into the party. Coordinate with your friends around the block and have them hide drawings or cutouts of shamrocks in their yards. Have them place shamrocks on their windows or safely draw them on the roads or walkways with sidewalk chalk. Once set up, the kids can wander the neighborhood spotting the many shamrocks on display. Now that’s some good craic!
7. When in Doubt, Go Green!
   If all else fails, then just go green…literally. Help the whole family dress in green (you wouldn’t want to be pinched). Drink green beverages and eat green food. Bake a cake with green frosting. Paint shamrocks on the cheeks of the little ones. Break out those leprechaun hats. And if you are really feeling the spirit, do all of these recommendations in your festive attire.
